This topic is a Civil Rights issue because the Natives were forced from their land by an oppressive government. The Natives were deprived of their natural rights, which is not only wrong, but unconstitutional. This treatment of the Native Americans was horrendous and embarresing for an American citizen to have to live with. The Natives were on this land well before any Europeans were, so they obviously had the right to control their own land. Even after being forced from their land unwillingly, the treaties that were made were soon broken by the selfish military and their leaders. Reserves that were given to the Natives were soon overpowered and taken for the gold that was within its land. A good example of this is in the Black Hills, where the Battle of Little Big Horn took place. Also a good example, the Wallowa Valley Reserve was stolen by the U.S. Military for its gold, which in turn started the Nez Perce War. During this war, the Nez Perce tribe's freedom was exterminated after long and vicious battles. The Native Americans were pushed from their land, pushed from their reserves, and deprived of their natural rights. This is unconstitutional and a very important Civil Rights issue. Even though the Indian Wars are over, it doesn't mean everything is good with the Americans and the Native Americans. During a demonstration in 1970 outside of Fort Lawton, the military took the Indians away to jail by brute force. This fort was supposed to belong to the Indians after a treaty, but the military never returned the land even though the Indians were hoping to build promising new facilities and schools. Indians are still pushed around and bullied, and they haven't been repaid for the troubled years they lived. The government still has a loot to do to heal the relationship between themselves and the Native Americans.
