Why Is this a civil rights issue?
The African Americans have been whipped, sprayed by fire hoses, and forced into extreme discomfort. They were enslaved, held back from becoming full citizens, and segregated by white anti-Negro people. They stood up for their rights, some militantly, some stubbornly. But whichever way they stood up, they stood. And fought for their rights as civilians of the United States.
