Then release Police dogs and turn Fire Hoses on crowds. In Jackson, Mississippi, N.A.A.C.P. Leader, Medgar Evers is murdered, June 12, entering his house. The March on Washington, and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech. Seattle School District voluntarily Desegregates 1964 Open-housing ordinance shot down by voters in Seattle City. In Mississippi, three Civil Rights workers are murdered. President Johnson singed the Civil Rights act. 1965 Malcolm X murdered February 21. The Voting act is passed granting clearance to all future voters. Riots killed 34 in LA. 1967 Sam smith is the first black Councilman in Seattle. 1968 In Memphis, Tennessee, Martin Luther King was assassinated. Seattle residents threw firebombs, broke windows, and hit people with rocks in response to M.L.K’s murder. Rally at Garfield High disrupted by stones and firebombs. 1969 Respected African American leader, Edwin Pratt shot to death in his own home. The murder was never solved. 1977 Seattle school Board plans to eliminate segregation by fall 1979 1978 Seattle is the largest city to desegregate voluntarily Us Supreme court outlaws racial quotas. 1989 The first African-American leader to become state governor was Douglas Wilder. 1992 Racial riots break out in LA after police officers were caught on tape beating a black man, Rodney King.
