Daniel Andrew Seeger was born in 1934. He came from a Roman Catholic background but later was heavily influenced by Quakers and their ideas. He also volunteered with the American Friends Service Committee. In 1958 he was drafted into the military. He was denied conscientious objector status, because he did not believe in a supreme being. He then was convicted in 1965 for draft refusal. In the Supreme Court case United States v. Seeger he won because they said that congress was mistaken and that even though he didn’t have a supreme being he still had a supreme belief.
This man had a huge influence on all conscientious objectors and the draft. The first main reason was that the Supreme Court decision United States v. Seeger made it possible for people who are drafted to have a conscientious objector status even if they don’t believe in a supreme being. Now more people qualified to be a conscientious objector which means more people were dismissed from the draft when there was one, and more people will be if it returns. Also, the fact that Daniel Seeger fought for his rights means that it is possible to fight and win if it is for something that you truly believe in.
