Chief Bigfoot

Chief Bigfoot lived from sometime in 1824, to December 29th 1890. He was considered a peaceful Chief of the Sioux and was very good at setting diplomatic problems without violence, but when war was needed he was also considered a good war leader. Chief Bigfoot had an alliance with Chief Sitting Bull, and with Crazy Horse, and they were all for keeping their land from the whites. Eventually Chief Bigfoot decided his tribe had to take up some of the whites traditions to keep in peace with them, but he encouraged them to keep their own sacred traditions. Eventually the whites decided that they wanted the Sioux's land, and sent out a large group of armed soldiers to "persuade" the Sioux into moving the reservation, even though this was against the contract. The Sioux tried to keep peace with the soldiers and settle the conflict peacefully, but some of the soldiers got violent and open fired on the Native Americans. This turned into a massacre in which many men, woman, and children died, a few escaped but most likely died in the outdoors without food, water, or shelter.Chief Bigfoot was one of the many Sioux natives that did not make it out of the massacre alive. This was later called the Wounded Knee Massacre being named after the land it took place. Today there is a cemetery filled with graves of the lost Native Americans who died, and a memorial in recognition for the suffering we caused them.
